Am I legally obliged to record time in Switzerland?
Yes, Article 46 of the Employment Act (ArG) obliges employers to record working time. In principle, the employer isobliged to record working time - however, the employer can pass on the obligation to record time to the employee. The daily and weekly working hours (including compensatory time), overtime and all breaks of more than 30 minutes must be recorded. Time recording using a time clock is generally permitted.

How long must the time recording be kept?
The employer is obliged to keep these working time records for 5 years (Art. 73 para. 2 ArGV 1). In addition, every employee must be able to see when they worked, took their breaks and finished work. This information can be used to check whether the working and rest time regulations of the Labor Act have been complied with.

How does digital time recording work?
There are several options for digital time recording. Either via a terminal, where employees can record their working time with a badge or fingerprint. Another option is time recording via a smartphone app. This allows employees to conveniently record their time while on the move. A third option is the web solution, where employees can log in via a browser and record their time, absences and projects. The advantage of the web solution and the app is that they are location-independent and available at any time, even when working from home.

If employees are often out of the office visiting customers or working from home, they can record their working hours anytime and anywhere via smartphone and an app. The working times are thus directly mapped in the software. This means that there is no double entry due to manual transfer of working times.
